Kids Care Week: Casady Cans Do 2012: Reflection and Results

Primary Division:  Things to have in mind for 2013: Carpool starts at 7:50 AM. We need volunteers with first hour off with permission to use their study hall to help students in the PD Division.  Stickers needed for everyday of the food drive at this division next year.  The Red Wagons of Hope is on Thursday and students with study hall at the times below are needed to help the children take their donations, weather provided. Due to bad weather, this activity did not take place in 2012, instead of the Red Wagons of Hope March to the Food Bank truck, the children placed their donations in a van that took the cans to the Food Bank truck

Lower Division: All Divisions' Winners:  MONDAY & TUESDAY.  Third place in overall food drive competition.  Tripp the dancing can was a hit! Fire fighters stickers were a great incentive, but nothing replaces the high school students as motivators and role models of caring and givers of time and enthusiasm.  We hope to have a 4th grade can counting team for next year.

Middle Division: Winner of all division Wednesday, Thursday and Friday! Overall winner of the Casady Cans Do, Students Against Hunger Competition.  The dancing can motivated others to help inspire students and parents to give.  New this year was music with the can dancer which prompted groups of dancing students in front of the MD on Thursday and Friday.  MD is considering making house costumes and creating a hunger fighting songs and dances.

Upper Division:  YAC chairs provided daily raffles and Judy H. revived the old Casady tradition of Canstruction Competitions.  The donations progressively increased, but we need to consider competitions between sports, clubs, and maybe an empty bowls banquet with silent auction and fashion show next year.  Fall Fest weather did not permit YAC to raise but $55 for the Food Bank.  If we have the drive at the same time as homecoming again, we should consider developing a collaboration with the alumni office and other clubs.  Multicultural Club surprised YAC with a $500 donation for the Food Drive after Fall Fest!

Making a Difference Day: A National Day of Doing Good

For more than 20 years, USA WEEKEND Magazine and Points of Light have joined together to sponsor Make A Difference Day, the largest national day of community service. Millions of volunteers around the world unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others.  

This year, thanks to the Tompkins family, Casady Service-Learning joined the volunteers from Buy for Less, OSU nursing school, Westminster Church, and Da Vita Dialysis Centers the morning of October, 27, National Make A Difference Day.   Volunteers framed a home and primed two houses.  There will be volunteer opportunities with Habitat for students 16 years old and older until the houses are completed.  All houses are located at Habitat's Hope Crossing Addition. Drive on I-235 and exit on Wilshire heading east to Kelley. Turn North on Kelley Ave. then turn west on N.E. 83rd. Make a right N.E. 84th and drive to Lindsay turn back north until house number 8512. The address is 8512 N.E. Lindsay. Must be sixteen to work on a Habitat for Humanity house.  Contact clayc@casady.org, 405-520-1325 for more details.

On Sunday, afternoon, from 3-5 PM, sophomore Chance B. introduced S.A.D.D. Students Against Destructive Decisions  with a pumpkin carving contest: "Carving out destructive decisions."  The Casady S.A.D.D. club first meeting was registered at the Make a Difference website as the official Casady project for Make a Difference Day.  Chance stated, "I felt there was a need in my community for the SADD chapter, we are all facing tough decisions, that are not always the popular decisions. Although it is not my comfort zone to step out in front, I felt that if I did that my peers may take notice and really listen."

1. Students Against Hunger-Casady Cans Do: Final details. 
Martin and Anne facilitated the meeting. 
-Martin related his volunteer experience at the Food Bank and requested students to consider volunteering next week, MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY @ the Food Bank.  Shifts are 8-12, and 1-4.  Mrs. Clay will be volunteering in the morning at Habitat for Humanity and in the afternoon at the Food Bank.

-Members delivered collection boxes, flyers, and can costumes to divisions.

-Speaker from Food Bank did a wonderful presentation at all chapels.  Thank you Martin for inspiring the Food Bank to send their education coordinator after your Wednesday volunteering.

2012 Casady Cans Do Food Drive Guidelines

Primary Division:  Mrs. Sharp, Valentina R: The PD will be collecting cans from Monday to Thursday.  All cans will be counted daily by UD volunteers and kept at the PD building.  At 10:30 and 1:30 on Thursday, students in red wagons will take their donations to the Food Bank truck.  UD volunteers will greet children and inspire them to bring donations. One volunteer should be wearing the can costume. NO STICKER INCENTIVE. On Thursday for the Hope Walk, UD volunteers still needed to wear the can costumes and lead the way to the truck.

Letter to Casady Family from YAC Senior Chair

Dear Casady Family,
 
Let's start Thanksgiving early!

Hunger can destroy every part of a child's life. The fear of not knowing where your next meal will come from and the physical pain of hunger is something no child, man or woman should ever have to experience. We would greatly appreciate it if you can donate canned food to the Regional Food Bank, which feeds over 90,000 people every week.




Through October 22-26, we will host our Students Against Hunger-Casady Cans Do food drive and collect canned food for hungry men, women, and children throughout Oklahoma. Every can you donate will go to feeding people in need and every dollar you donate will provide five meals or six and a half pounds of food.

The School that collects the most pounds of food per student will receive the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma Students Against Hunger Traveling Trophy (and bragging rights for a full year)!

The most needed non-perishable food donations include canned meats, Meat-Based Soups, Canned Fruits, Canned Vegetables, Peanut Butter, or Canned Beans.

Help us stop hunger. Thank you all.

Minutes of Students Against Hunger meetings: Breakfast and B-block

YAC Senior Chairs, Judy H. Caitlin H. Martin J. and Rebekah D. are creating the process that will inspire all divisions to bring donations of cans and money. The Casady Cans Do Food Drive will be the week of Homecoming and Fall Fest, October 22-26. Please bring money and/or cans and volunteer to help motivate divisions wearing can costumes and counting cans for competitions.

1. Process of the Drive: The drive is the week of homecoming, October 22-26.  The drive will be from Monday to Friday.

Each division has a different process and has a faculty sponsor.  YAC teens heading every division are: UD: Rebekah D. MD: Caitlin H. LD: Valentina and Abby, PD: Judy.  Teens heading each division need to be at the division between 7:00- 7:15 a.m.  They should have cell numbers of their volunteers and remind them their responsibility to help the day before.

Senior YAC chairs are writing the letter to parents and making flyers.  YAC members, volunteering at each division were asked to make posters for their division.  Each division will have a YAC member wearing a can costume to motivate students and parents to donate.  Judy is repairing the can costumes.  To make the posters and raise their own awareness of hunger in Oklahoma, YAC members should read http://www.regionalfoodbank.org/assets/sah/Food%20Drive%20Packet-2012.pdf before making posters.  They should also visit the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma site http://www.regionalfoodbank.org/.  We hope YAC members will volunteer at the Food Bank at least once before the drive.  YAC members are encouraged to volunteer at the Food Bank October 27. Upper Division: Responsible Faculty:  Mrs. Clay: Process  Letter/pushpage is due  Tuesday morning.  YAC chairs are finishing writing the letter to parents and students.  There will be a  can sculpture competition on Thursday.  We do not know the prize yet.  On a daily basis, there will be a Food-4-Food competition and ruffle.  The competition is between grades and the winning grade will get to the salad bar first. Accuracy counting cans is a must.  Numbers of cans brought must be e-mailed to coach Warden by 8:30 a.m.  Thank you, Mrs. Warden!  YAC members will be soliciting donations for the daily ruffle.  Mrs. Clay will try to get a doughnut donation.  There is a chapel speaker coming from the Food Bank the Friday before the canned food drive.  We requested Coach Jensen to speak about his experience with school pantry at PC West for football players.
Still TBC:  cheerleaders cheering for the canned food drive? The can can of cans as a YAC Tidbit at chapel.  YAC members helping at different divisions are making posters and flyers for each division.

Senior Chair Responsible: Rebekah
5 cans, $ 5 to compete for being first for food at Calvert.  Daily winners!  Cans are collected daily by Mr. Fresonke's crew by 8:30 a.m. Cans are placed at a Food Bank trailer which arrives on Monday and is taken to the Food Bank where UD donations join donations from all other divisions.  There will be no collection of cans on Thursday.  Friday, cans will be collected after B-block because they will be used in a canstruction competition. The prize for the canstruction competition is TBA.

UD Can Sculpture Competition Rules
a. Due to space consideration, only 4 sculptures are possible, one per class.  There is no limit to the number of people in the canstruction teams.  Team members are responsible for bringing all cans and supplies needed to build the structure.   Designs should be turned in to Mrs. Clay by Wednesday at the end of the day.   Construction begins during B-block on Thursday and ends during B-block on Friday.  Winner will be announced at Friday lunch time.  Judges: Available Art and Math Department faculty, Mr. Philipson and Mrs. Warden.

Lower Division: Responsible Faculty:  Mrs. France  They do not have a competition except they like to announce total number of cans brought daily as an incentive to beat their record for the next day.  Mrs. France has some stickers, but will love to have stickers for every day.  They loved Tripp, the dancing can.  Donations increased after every performance.  Teachers send Food Bank bags

Primary Division:  Responsigle Faculty:  Mrs. Sharp:  They love to know the number of cans brought.  We might have a healthy plate poster to teach nutrition and healthy choices.  They love the can costumes.  They also need helpers in can costumes to take their donations in wagons on Thursday at 10:00 weather provided.
